Bluebird Hills Farm

As you can imagine, after having alpacas for over 20 years, we have learned a few things. As a former physician assistant, I have enjoyed learning about the husbandry and veterinary care of the alpacas and , more recently, the sheep. I have attended almost every veterinary conference dedicated to alpacas and their cousins at Ohio State Veterinary School, and have gleaned a great deal of information from surfing the world wide web. There is also the education that comes from the experience of raising hundreds of alpacas over the last 22 years. And also the experience from being trained to judge alpacas and their fleeces.

I have loved working with fiber since I was a young girl. I learned to knit when I was 10 or 11, learned to weave when I was 12, took up spinning briefly when I was on my way to college, and now enjoy dyeing and felting.

That is what is so captivating about alpacas and sheep as livestock. They have something for almost everyone! From teaching children the responsibilities and life lessons afforded by caring for livestock, to working in ways suited to you with their fiber, to simply enjoying products made from this natural and renewable fleece- alpacas and sheep offer it all!

To make accessing the information easier, I have separated it into 2 categories- “ANIMALS” and “FLEECE”. “ANIMALS” focuses on the care, feeding, housing, and conformation of alpacas. “FLEECE” focuses on some of the science behind animals fiber, and well as topics such as dyeing, yarns, and fiber arts. I don’t claim to be an expert in either category, but  hopefully I can provide you with enough information to get you started and minimally pique your curiosity.
